Many of our affiliated Clubs, Events, Instructors & Deejays hit the ground running with their dance/music activities beginning the first of the year. Whether a Club or Supporting Member, if you’ve yet to renew your 2022 membership, we invite you to complete your application for membership and licensing for 2022. There is an option on the application to deduct your 2021 music licensing credit, if applicable. We offer printable forms for you to mail in along with member dues and music licensing fees. We realize it can be difficult to estimate how many attendees you will have for 2022 , but just do the best you can. We can always reconfigure the numbers at a later date. If you have credit extended from 2021 and you just need to pay membership dues, you may do so by completing the membership form and send it along with dues by mail. We hesitate to refer you to our PayPal account as it has been unreliable as of late. We trust that 2022 thus far has been a great year for you in order to get back to some serious dancing!! Stay up to date on canceled events, share virtual classes, or just hang out with us on our Facebook group 😎

SHAG DANCING
|
|
The Shag is a VERY popular dance style known mostly in the southern United States and is most commonly associated with the beach towns of North and South Carolina.
It is a two-person, male-led dance with a basic 6-count step that allows much room for improvisation and imagination. The dance looks deceptively smooth and easy but is actually quite complicated. Although the evolving Shag was done to jazz and swing music in the ‘20s and ‘30s, the modern Shag began gaining more popularity on the Carolina coasts in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Billy Jeffers, who deemed himself a “fastdancer”, not a Shagger, became one of the first “stars” associated with the dance during the ‘40s and early ‘50s. Next came names such as “Chicken” Hicks and “Big” George Linberry, who helped infiltrate the Carolina coast with the smooth sound of “beach music” and practiced the smooth steps that would become the modern Shag. Ther were many beach club pavilions sporting dilapidated outsides and wooden dance floors where teenagers would sneak off and dance the night away. Probably the most famous of all these dance clubs was the Pad in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Now in its prime, the Shag has become more than just a dance. It is a social phenomenon with dancers from all over the country drawn to its image of daring and excitement.
In 1954 Hurricane Hazel had demolished most of the old dance pavilions and rock n’ roll had surpassed Shag music in popularity. But the Shag was revived in the early ‘70s when a competitive dance circuit formed in Atlantic Beach, NC inspired a renewed interest in the dance. In the early 2000s, the Society of Stranders (SOS) and the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) listed thousands of members and there are millions of people nationwide who dance the Shag. Editor's note: Excerpts of this article are from the Encyclopedia of North Carolina by William S. Powell. Future newsletter articles will be about the numerous FastDance styles promoted by the NFA.
